Diatomite 1-2mm, also known as diatomaceous earth, is the naturally occurring fossilized remains of diatoms. Diatoms are single-celled aquatic algae. Diatomite is an almost pure sedimentary deposit consisting almost entirely of amorphous silica. It is not crystalline silica. The heating process does not exceed the temperature necessary to convert amorphous silica to crystalline silica.
Plant Health
Its ability to hold two times its weight of water will create root aeration. Diatomite is an inorganic rock that does not attract or host fungi or insects. Thus, preventing pesticide problems. If you have pest problems use organic Neem Oil spray.
Good soil does not have compaction and comprises of sufficient water and nutrients. This also helps in allowing the roots of plants to be able to continuously transport carbon dioxide and oxygen to and from the soil surface. Diatomite improves the quality of soil because of its porous properties and naturally occurring silica. Water and gases can be easily transported through the pores and nutrients can be stored in the microscopic holes.
To use for spillage, spread over spill and wait till all the liquid has been absorbed. Next, weep up and dispose of contained spillage according to regulations.
Excellent for absorbing grease in barbecue and grill drip trays where fat can pose a significant fire hazard. Commonly used to absorb odours in fridges, ash trays and rubbish bins. Another popular and efficient use is in pet litter materials as it absorbs odours. After use, add to garden to maximise water retention
To futher enhance your soil you can try adding zeolite. It reduces nitrate leaching from nitrogen-rich fertilizers by inhibiting the nitrification of ammonium to nitrate which reduces groundwater contamination. The inclusion of zeolite into planting holes, applied around existing plants or combined with fertilizer, will improve the uptake of nutrients to the plants and, in turn, result in higher yields.
Pumice can also improve the quality of soil because of its porous properties, water and gases can be transported easily through the pores and nutrients can be stored in the microscopic holes. Pumice rock fragments are inorganic therefore no decomposition and little compaction occurs. All our Minerals are source from either Australia or New Zealand.
