WHAT IS PEAT MOSS?

Baltic Peat Moss is a natural and unique material which remains the most important basic substance for use in growing media. Ideal for propagation and finish production of crops. It does not contain harmful microorganisms or weed seeds unlike poorly processed compost. It is ideal for planting fruits and vegetables that are acid loving such as strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes and revitalising garden lawns.

Benefits

Cost effective as it does not break down easily

Highly absorbent, creating fertile soil and speeding up plant growth

Perfect for propagation and crop

Moisture retention

Peat moss is a highly absorbent material and can retain water much better than other types of soils. This is a great agent to include in your garden soil and also makes a great place for seed starting and as mixes with other growing materials.

Sterile medium

Peat moss is easy to work with as it provides a sterile medium, which is ideal for healthy plants and speeding up growth. It does not contain any harmful chemicals,  weed seeds and other bad materials. This makes the material perfect as a starting medium for young and vulnerable plants which are susceptible to the surrounding environment and require lots of tender loving care.

Acidic pH features

Peat moss is slightly acidic, which is great for acid-loving plants, fruits and vegetables. Some examples are camellias, strawberries, blueberries, pieris, heathers, azaleas and tomatoes. If your garden soil is not acidic, add a bit of peat moss to make your acid-loving plants thrive and speed up growth.

Compaction prevention

Peat moss prevents compaction as compared to other materials and is especially important in promoting useful soil. Compaction reduces water absorption and makes it hard to create space for water and air to pass through and stagnate plant growth. Peat moss is helpful because it easily rehydrates and makes the growing mix drain better and one application can prevent soil compaction for years.

Soil conditioning

Peat moss softens the soil structure and improves the drainage for clay and heavy soils that get compact easily. For sandy soil, peat moss helps retain moisture and nutrients for plant roots. It is often applied with the ratio 2:1. Two parts of soil per one part of peat moss.

Keep in mind that it changes the pH level of the soil so measure and watch out if the pH level drifts too much.

Hydroponic growing

Peat moss is good medium for hydroponics but is often in conjunction with other growing media like perlite and vermiculite to balance the moisture and aeration.
